Summary

Detailed, ready-to-use protocols for human biomonitoring methods, are provided here, which were developed to monitor concentrations of occupational toxicants, yet can be equally used for environmental monitoring. Examples are new methods for the determination of organophosphates or musk compounds in blood. All the methods are reliable, reproducible, adhere to 'Good Laboratory Practice' standards and cover all the required steps from sampling to the interpretation of results with respect to relevant biological exposure values. This includes data on precision, accuracy, and detection limit, calibration procedures as well as potential sources of systematic errors.

Author Biography

Jürgen Angerer is Head of the working group "Analytical Chemistry" of the Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area. He is a member of the International Society of Exposure Analysis (ISEA) and board member of the International Society of Environmental Medicine (ISEM). He is author and editor of numerous books and belongs to the editorial boards of the Journal of Chromatography B as well as of the International Journal of Hygiene and Environmental Health.

Helmut Greim is Head of the Scientific Committee for Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL), which is working for the European Commission, and the former Head of the DFG-Senate Commission for the Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the Work Area.
