Summary

The Malungun Journal is the darkly humorous, lyrical diary of Henry Dale Jennings, scion of an old southern family that has resided in Culpeper, Virginia since well before the Civil War. A Vietnam vet and former high school history teacher he is now invalided, returned to, and adrift in the heirloom-filled family house, tossed back and forth by his memories which have become entangled with the history of the Civil War. The Malunguns live next door on land long ago wrested from the original Jennings's home site. Always detested and resented by Henry Dale, he begins the journal as a log of the Malungun's perceived misdeeds, past and present, hoping to chronicle evidence of a crime large enough to send them away. What starts as a stone of revenge changes to become a confessional, revealing a man lost in past glories, mired in a deep sense of injustice, afraid of love and scornful of connection. Word-rich, atmospheric and deeply moving, the Malungun Journal becomes his thin thread back to hope and redemption.Finalist 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Awards
