Author Biography

Mario Botta (b. Mendrisio, 1943)
After serving as an apprentice in the studio of the architect Tita Carloni in Lugano, Mario Botta attended art school in Milan. He then continued his studies at the College of Architecture in Venice where he earned his degree in 1969. His examiners were Carlo Scarpa and Giuseppe Mazzariol.

During his time in Venice, he met Le Corbusier and Louis I. Kahn, with whom he worked on both the new Venice city hospital and on a design for the city's new congress centre.

He then set up an architecture practice in the Ticino, and his very first buildings revealed his characteristically intense approach to design work-- an approach that would be translated into countless buildings around the world (ranging from his one-family houses in the Ticino to the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco). From 1970 onwards, he devoted a great deal of his time to teaching and to running conferences, seminars and courses at numerous schools of architecture in Europe, Asia, the United States and South America.

In recent years, he has been deeply involved in the design and preparation of the new Ticino School of Architecture, a part of the University of Italian Switzerland, which opened its doors in October 1996.
