This is a study of the religious culture and intellectual history of the German-speaking regions of Europe between the late thirteenth and the mid-fifteenth centuries. At the centre of the book is the first study in any language of the works of Marquard von Lindau, arguably the most widely-read author in the German language before the Reformation. Marquard was active in the second half of the fourteenth century, and belonged to the generation immediately after theBlack Death. His most successful works deal with pragmatic issues of the Christian life, and accordingly the book has a thematic structure, examining Marquard's highly distinctive and frequently critical contribution to the contemporary understanding of Christ's Passion, the Eucharist, and theVirgin Mary.
