Chapter One

Mars in Aries

The Sexual Extremist

General Characteristics

Mars in Aries Lovers often appear to be a bit out of control--that's just the way they like it. They enjoy getting carried away by sex, being swept up in its energy and physical urgency. You can't rankle Mars in Aries Lovers by saying that they don't know what they're doing. "So much the better," they will answer, for nothing takes the thrill out of sex more quickly for these Lovers than knowing where it will end or having everything under control. By their standards, good sex means losing control by creating situations in which his or her partner--and anyone else unlucky enough to get too close to the action--is sent headlong into a maelstrom of trouble and ecstasy.

Given their headlong approach to love, it is not surprising that this Mars type often ends up in troublesome relationships. Once again, the Mars in Aries Lover will answer, "So much the better." This is a Lover who cannot abide being too comfortable. A relationship which has no contention, pain, struggle, or sorrow hardly seems worth pursuing. Thus, these Lovers are frequently found in impossible romantic situations, making one bad choice after another, but loving it.

Why do they love it so? Why is it that they insist on arguments, trouble, and even pain in their sexual relationships? For Mars in Aries Lovers, sex that just feels good is a waste of precious time. Sensation for its own sake means very little to them and the joys of the flesh have only the most minimal allure. Sex must be coupled with strong emotions and extraordinary situations to satisfy these radical Lovers. There has to be drama: a sense of dire need, unstoppable passion, and impending drastic measures in order to lift sex out of the sensual commonplace and transform it into an experience worth remembering.

These are competitive, challenge-oriented Lovers. Typically, they are drawn to the partner who is hardest to get--the one who initially says no or who seems most unlikely to respond. In some cases this competitiveness becomes a major handicap. It compels these Lovers to regard the people they sleep with as trophies and to measure their own ability as lovers solely by the number and variety of their sexual contacts. Sometimes this tendency to see love as a challenge can have happy results. It allows the Mars in Aries Lover to approach relationships with an excitement that is endlessly renewed. As long as the relationship is moving, as long as it is a constantly unfolding process or even an ongoing battle, these Lovers never lose interest.

Mars in Aries individuals can be very desirable and active Lovers due to their fiery passions and endless hunger for excitement. Because their enjoyment of sex is more dependent on psychological factors than physical pleasures, these Lovers are also capable of withdrawing from sex for extended periods of time. It's not that they lose their capacity for passion. It's just that they can't get excited about sex that isn't wrapped in a challenge. Sex without fire is worse than no sex at all for these Lovers. But when the right kind of relationship comes along, it is truly amazing how quickly the fire reignites.

If you have Mars in Aries with Venus in Aries you are ...

the Untamed Extremist

You have no capacity for soft words or gentle persuasion. You win hearts with the explosive force of your ego or not at all. The intensity of your lovemaking, along with your aggressive, sometimes even belligerent approach to relationships, will likely frighten away many prospective partners. But those brave enough to weather the storms will find you a passionate, caring, and fiercely loyal Lover.

The real problem in your sex life is finding a stopping place. You develop intense bonds with your sexual partners but you rarely give yourself a chance to stop and enjoy the fruits of these relationships. You are always moving away from, or struggling against, comfort and complacency. You are a restless and destructively inconsistent Lover who often has difficulty holding on to love, even with all your passion and loyalty.

Case History

Charles Baudelaire (French poet, art critic, and translator noted for his violent and extravagant imagery. Author of Les Fleurs du Mal). Born April 9, 1821, at 3 P.M. in Paris, France (de Jonge 1976) .

Baudelaire's father was an ex-priest who married late and died when Baudelaire was six. Left to fend for themselves, Baudelaire and his mother developed an extremely strong and affectionate bond. Unfortunately for Baudelaire, his beloved mother remarried. Baudelaire got along poorly with his stepfather and, for the rest of his life, resented his mother's defection.

When he was eighteen, Baudelaire was kicked out of school because of his rebellious attitude. His stepfather sent him away on a voyage to the Far East but this only increased the angry youngster's eccentricity. When he returned, he quickly established himself as a dandy and a libertine. Clothes became his passion and he spent indecent sums of money on fine furniture, art, and the various accouterments of his new lifestyle.

Baudelaire had inherited a small fortune from his natural father but, by the time he was twenty-three, half of his capital was squandered and he was beset by huge debts. His mother and stepfather had the wayward young man declared incompetent and gave control of his fortune to a trustee. This arrangement allowed Baudelaire a small income but did not address his debts. Baudelaire's finances remained a shambles for the remainder of his life. He was constantly harried by creditors and often forced to create new debts in order to keep old creditors at bay.

Early in his career as a dandy, Baudelaire acquired an African mistress named Jeanne Duval. Duval was an actress of sorts who was noted for her sensuous charm. At first Baudelaire was able to keep her in a luxurious apartment but, when he was stripped of his money, he and Duval began living together in much reduced circumstances. Oddly enough, this shocking reversal only strengthened the bond between Duval and Baudelaire. They remained a couple for ten years. Baudelaire continued to give her love and support for the rest of his life.

Duval was not an easygoing woman. She had no appreciation of the writer's new commitment to poetry and literature and she continually badgered him to find a better way of making money. Often Baudelaire had to work while she slept, or he stayed with a friend in order to escape her nagging. Duval also stole from her lover, lied to him, and was constantly unfaithful. However, Baudelaire seemed undeterred by the difficulty of this relationship. He celebrated Duval in his poetry as much for her coldness and cruelty as for her extraordinary sexual charms.

Both Duval and Baudelaire had syphilis. It appears that the poet contracted the disease before he met Duval and possibly infected her. The disease slowly destroyed the health of both lovers, though the toll it took on the once beautiful Duval was perhaps more dramatic. However, it was not the sudden decline in her physical charms that caused Baudelaire to separate from his "black Venus." Rather, at thirty-one, he finally decided that Duval would never give him the peace he needed to work.

Many of his friends observed that although Baudelaire loved to flirt and make sexual challenges to women, he held the sex act itself in contempt. Even though his poetry is filled with images of passionate sexual intercourse, his approach to sex was largely cerebral. He liked to go to the streets where prostitutes met their clients and coolly observe their transactions. Some of his friends went so far as to call Baudelaire a "virgin" poet, but there is ample evidence that, on occasion, the writer did more than just observe prostitutes.

After his break with Duval, Baudelaire began to send anonymous letters and poetry to Apollonie Sabatier, the voluptuous concubine of a man of wealth. His correspondence contained gentle literary declarations of spiritual love, accompanied by a brutal fantasy of sadistic lovemaking. Sabatier was intrigued and, once Baudelaire announced himself, she was anxious to meet him in the flesh. After they met and had sex, the poet suddenly withdrew from the relationship, declaring that he could not continue loving her spiritually as his "white Venus" now that he knew her as a real woman.

Baudelaire had a brief affair with an actress (who became his "green-eyed Venus") and tried once more to set up house with Duval, to no avail. At thirty-six he published Les Fleurs du Mal , a book of poetry which he had carefully put together in the hopes of making a literary coupe. Baudelaire planned to shock his audience with his unusual, violently sexual imagery and modernistic themes. Instead, the shock he expected turned into public outrage and Baudelaire was prosecuted as a pornographer.

After the disastrous publication of Les Fleurs du Mal , Baudelaire returned to Duval. Her condition was worsening. He saw to it she was admitted to a hospital where her syphilitic paralysis could be treated. He continued to find comfort and a sentimental release in her company even though he could not bear to stay with her very long. When he was forty-one, Baudelaire also became paralyzed by syphilis. He spent his remaining years as an invalid, cared for by his mother. He died at the age of forty-six.

Other Examples

Karen "Isak" Dinesen (Danish writer whose novelOut of Africa recounted her impetuous love affair with a "great white hunter"). Born April 17, 1885 (Encyclopedia Britannica 1997) .

Orson Welles (actor and maker of the movie Citizen Kane who survived a volatile marriage with film star Rita Hayworth). Born May 6, 1915 (Celebrity Birthday Guide, 4th edition, by Axiom Information Services, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1997) .

If you have Mars in Aries with Venus in Taurus you are ...

the Undercover Extremist

Yours is a difficult combination. A sensualist at heart, you don't really approve of the headlong recklessness of your sexual nature. You would like to slow down and give your senses ample time to drink in each erotic experience. But you find that your Mars in Aries nature runs well only in high gear and the more you try to control it, the more ungainly and muddled you appear. You are among the most practical Mars in Aries Lover but, unfortunately, your actions often give little evidence of this wisdom.

On the positive side, in the right situation and with the right partner, your unique combination of sensual patience and volcanic passion can make you a gifted Lover. And there is a sweetness and soft conventionality about your sexual nature that allows you to get away with sexual extremes that might land other Mars in Aries Lovers in jail. If you can learn from your frustrations and build on your strengths, your capacity for erotic expression is unlimited.

Case History

Edward, Duke of Windsor (King Edward VIII--British monarch who stunned the world when he gave up his throne to marry an American divorcée). Born June 23, 1894, at 9:55 P.M. in Richmond Park, England (Higham 1988; Zeigler 1991).

It's probably safe to say that no king in the making has a normal childhood, but Edward's may have been more difficult than necessary. Both of his parents believed that duty came before love and they raised their eldest son accordingly. His father was particularly distant and authoritative.

When Edward was eight his female caretakers were replaced by men in the hope that the constant exposure to manly virtue might cure the boy of his girlish sensitivity and emotionalism. As a result of this ploy, the Prince had little contact with the opposite sex during his early adolescence and remained painfully shy in their presence. As he grew older and developed into a small but handsome young prince, Edward's closeness to his male mentors fueled rumors that he was a homosexual. Actually, Edward showed little interest in sex of any sort until he turned twenty-two.
