Summary

In 1974 the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife launched a five-year survey to map the distribution of the breeding birds in the Commonwealth - the first such comprehensive effort in North America. During this period hundreds of volunteers spent countless hours in the field, ultimately confirming 198 breeding species.

Author Biography

Wayne R. Petersen, Field Ornithologist with the Massachusetts Audubon Society W. Roger Meservey teaches biology courses at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Anna Maria College in Paxton, Massachusetts John Sill lives in the mountains near Franklin, North Carolina. His work has appeared in a number of books and magazines John's work has been exhibited at the Birds in Art Exhibition in Wausau, Wisconsin Barry W. Van Dusen resides in central Massachusetts. He has contributed illustrations to a variety of natural history books and pocket guides. He exhibits regularly at the Birds in Art Exhibition in Wausau, Wisconsin, as well as in galleries, museums, and nature centers throughout New England and Europe
