Summary

English summary: The reign of Matthias Corvinus (1458-1490) is not only considered as the last bloom of the medieval Hungarian state, but signified for all east-central Europe a highly animated stage in the transition from the medieval to the modern period. Corvinus' interests were as concerned with the east, where he sought to halt the advance of the Ottomans, who had conquered Constantinople in 1453, as well as with the west, where he subsequently strove to unify Bohemia and Habsburg territories with Hungary into the first "Monarchy of the Danube." In addition the king promoted art and culture, drew Italian humanists and native scholars to his court and collected Latin and Greek manuscripts. These political and diplomatic aspects of the lordship of Corvinus are illuminates in the studies of this volume at the same time as religious and cultural aspects; moreover the representation of the king and his age are analyzed in western as well as Eastern sources up to the historiography of the 19th and 20th centuries. With this interdisciplinary view of east and west and vice versa, this book is addressed to both the western European centered medieval studies as well as to eastern European concentrated medieval and Byzantine periods.
