In 1430, the Venetian scholar Johannes Fontana published a treatise that contained his essay Tractatus de instrumentis, which describes and illustrates instruments used for the mechanical storage, combination and encryption of information. The first part of this volume introduces Fontana and his oeuvre. The second part contains the original Latin text of the essay together with a translation and a cryptological analysis. German text.
