Summary

Numerous improvements in our understanding of the mechanisms thatunderlie neuropathic pain states have come from the development ofanimal models, most of which involve partial peripheral nerve injury. The animal models have shown that nerve injury initiates a cascade ofevents resulting in altered neurochemistry and molecular biology of theperipheral neurons, the dorsal root ganglion cell, and changes inneurotransmitter and receptor expression in the dorsal horn of thespinal cord. Moreover, nerve injury produces anatomical changes withfunctional consequences. This volume summarises the current understanding of thepathophysiological processes in the peripheral and central nervoussystem that contribute to the neuropathic pain. It provides a timelyreview of neuropathic pain mechanisms, written by experts in the field. The book focuses on peripheral consequences of nerve injury, spinal cordplasticity following peripheral nerve injury, preclinical and clinicalparadigms, and new treatment strategie
