Summary

This unique overview of plants and transgenic techniques of great scientific, medicinal and economic value for both industry and academia covers the whole spectrum from cell culture techniques, via genetic engineering and secondary product metabolism right up to the use of transgenic plants for the production of bioactive compounds. Practical examples are given throughout, including the production of cancer therapeutics, functional food, and flavor compounds in plants.Of particular interest to the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, as well as medicinal chemists, biochemists, and molecular biologists.

Author Biography

Prof. Oliver Kayser studied pharmacy at the University M++nster. He received his PhD and his postdoctoral qualification (Habilitation) from the Free University Berlin in 1997 and 2003. In 2004 he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University Groningen for Pharmaceutical Biology. His research interests are phytochemstry, combinatorial biosynthesis and plant biotechnology. He has published more than 100 peer reviewed papers and proceedings and has authored and edited 5 books.

Professor Wim Quax is head of the laboratory of pharmaceutical biology in the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy in the Netherlands. He has published more than 70 peer reviewed papers, and is member of numerous scientific organisations and committees.
