Summary

Hancock#xE2;#xAC;"s most distinctive contribution to the Colonial cause of independence and freedom was money. He was a merchant who had inherited a fortune from an uncle. He used his wealth to help finance the Revolution.Nevertheless, he is best remembered now for his flamboyant signature on the Declaration. He boldly strode forward and placed his signature on the document in large letters. Stepping back, he uttered these immortal words: #xE2;#xAC;SThere! His Majesty can now read my name without his spectacles, and can now double his reward of 500 pounds on my head! That is my defiance!#xE2;#xAC; Another noteworthy signer, so often forgotten with time#xE2;#xAC;"s swift passage, was a man named Stephen Hopkins. A school textbook n 1848 had this to say about Hopkins: #xE2;#xAC;SHe was a sincere devout Christian, and the impress of his profession was upon all his deeds.#xE2;#xAC; Hopkins was seriously affected with palsy. After signing the Declaration of Independence, his hands were seen to be visibly shaking. He carefully handed the quill to William Ellery and spoke these words: #xE2;#xAC;SMy hands tremble, but my heart does not.#xE2;#xAC;
