Summary

By the late spring of 1944, the world had been at war with Germany and its allies for five gruelling, murderous years. Then, in the dead of night on June 5-6, hundreds of elite Canadian paratroopers hurled themselves from aircraft well behind enemy lines to initiate actions that were critical if the Allied invasion fleet hoped to have any measure of success in France. This is the gripping story of some of Canada's toughest and most daring soldiers in the Second World War and what they did in their finest hours. Through the lens of these gallant paratroopers we glimpse the chaos and destruction of combat in the greatest invasion in military history. From aircraft formations striking out on a turbulent flight across the English Channel to deadly hand-to-hand combat in the Normandy countryside, "Men of Steel" delivers a detailed account of Canadian paratroopers and their crucial role in D-Day.
