Summary

What specific problems arise within families that have members suffering from drug addiction, mental illness or neglect? What forms of treatment are available for families affected by such disorders? And, can such problems among family members -- if untreated or undetected -- lead to criminal or delinquent behaviour in the future? This practical volume begins by examining various disorders that can -- and often do -- afflict families: schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, drug abuse, alcoholism, and child neglect. Family characteristics of families with schizophrenic members are probed, and both the 'planned change' therapeutic approach and brief therapy for treating families with a member diagnosed as mentally ill are presented. Also considered are guidelines for conducting treatment with families of alcoholics and drug abusers from a structural strategic orientation. Finally, the contributors demonstrate how such disorders -- if not corrected -- can lead to future involvement in crime and delinquency, discuss the poor state of current research on these topics, and provide valuable suggestions for future research.
