Summary

Metallica formed in 1981 when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a local LA newspaper. Their early recordings featured fast thrash tempos, instrumentals, and a raw aggression that made them metal gods almost instantly. Master of Puppets(1986) is widely regarded as one of the most intense and influential of all thrash metal recordings, and their eponymous 1991 album went straight to No. 1 on theBillboard 200. Here are the stories behind such songs as "Ride the Lightning," "The Thing that Should Not Be," "The Shortest Straw," and "The God that Failed"written about the death of lyricist James Hetfield's mother.
