Summary

Wetlands occur at the interface of upland and aquatic ecosystems, making them unique environments that are vital to ecosystem health. But wetlands are also challenging to assess and understand. Wetland researchers have developed specialized analytical methods and sampling techniques that are now assembled for the first time in one volume. More than 100 experts provide key methods for sampling, quantifying, and characterizing wetlands, including wetland soils, plant communities and processes, nutrients, greenhouse gas fluxes,redox-active elements, toxins, transport processes, wetland water budgets, and more.

Author Biography

Ronald D. DeLaune is Research Professor in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences, School of Coast and Environment at the Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. He has more than 40 years of experience in wetland research and has authored more than 350 journal publications on redox chemistry of flooded soils and sediments, coastal marsh stability, soil–plant relationships, biogeochemical cycling, and environmental issues impacting wetlands. Dr. DeLaune is a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America.

K. Ramesh Reddy is Graduate Research Professor (distinguished professorship) and Chair of Soil and Water Science Department at the University of Florida. For the past 40+ years, Dr. Reddy researched and taught the science and technology of biogeochemistry with an emphasis on macroelemental cycling, soil and water quality, wetlands and aquatic ecosystem restoration, and carbon sequestration and greenhouse gases. Dr. Reddy is a Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Curtis J. Richardson is Professor of Resource Ecology and Founding Director of Duke University Wetland Center in the Nicholas School of the Environment. He has researched and taught wetland biogeochemistry and restoration for over 35 years. He was Principal Investigator on a major research effort on phosphorus inputs and hydrologic flow in the Everglades. He is Past President of the Society of Wetland Scientists and has received the National Wetland Scientist of the Year Award from the Environmental Law Institute. Dr. Richardson is a Fellow of the Society of Wetland Scientists, the Soil Science Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

J. Patrick Megonigal is Senior Scientist and Deputy Director at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Edgewater, MD. He has 30 years of experience in research and education and more than 90 peer-reviewed publications. His research is focused on wetland ecosystem response to global changes such as elevated carbon dioxide, nitrogen pollution, and sea level rise. Dr. Megonigal is Curator of the traveling exhibit Dig It! The Secrets of Soil, a Past President of the Society of Wetland Scientists, and a Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America.
