Anne Sexton turned her life into a poetic subject matter. She was a pioneer in confessional lyrics, thus paving the way for other writers who admired her crude display of intimacy and her usage of subject matters considered taboo for writers in general, and for a women in particular. The vibrant sincerity that characterizes her work exposes passion and pain. "Poems and only poems have saved my life," she would say, even if they weren't enough to prevent her from taking her own life at age twenty.
