Summary

1898. Looking at their native Cartagena shrink over the horizon, Zoilo and Elisa are standing on the deck of the transatlantic ship that will take them to a new and unknown life in Mexico. Driven away by the violent mining revolts in Spain, the wealthy marriage must escape before their workers rise up against them and their property.

However, shortly after the ship departs, Zoilo disappears under mysterious circumstances, leaving Elisa by herself, at a time when a woman’s only means of survival is her strength if she is all alone. All at once, the young woman looks into the past of the man she loves and faces an evolving world that announces the end of an era.

Nacho Sánchez Carrasco created a thrilling novel, impeccably documented, in which deceit, love, and the dangers of ambition weave a fascinating story.
