Summary

Jacob Taverner, owner of a tavern at the English coast, is an eccentric old man. The police think so too. Inspector Frank Abbot grows suspicious when he realizes that Taverner has invited eight members of his extended family to the Sonnenrad, his tavern, in hopes of choosing an heir. But Scotland Yard suspects this is merely a ploy to defer attention from his other illegal activity: contraband. However, they possess no evidence of this, and therefore Abbot asks Miss Silver to stay at Sonnenrad for the weekend to observe what happends. He never expected that the old lady would be confronted with a murder...
