This case study demonstrates the extraordinary pressure that state's attorneys are under to clear their books of infamous crimes. This sometimes leads to tunnel vision concerning their original theory and suspects regardless of subsequent evidence. Not even another man's confession to the crime and DNA evidence that corroborated his story could convince prosecutors in this case to change their theory despite two reversals by the state supreme court. Ignoring the objections of other investigators and attorneys, the state tried the men again. Finally, after a detective admitted to an 'œerror' in his previous testimony, a judge dismissed the charges, but only after one defendant had spent thirteen years on death row. Seven investigators and prosecutors were tried for obstruction of justice, but it is problematic whether the outcome served as a warning to other prosecutors who may develop their own tunnel vision in their investigations.
