After twenty years as the weatherman for the popular morning show, Hello, World, Stanley Waters still likes to go before the cameras - especially if it helps advertise Blue Skies, the charming bed-and-breakfast he now runs in his Virginia hometown. He gets his wish when a Civil War reenactment brings the Hello, World gang down to Higgins to tape Stanley marching off to war in Confederate gray. But the mock battle could be his last stand when a well-aimed minie ball emerges from the mist to knock Stanley unconscious and kill local businessman Rance Wofford. Which man was the target? No one knows.
The idea that someone might want to kill him shakes Stanley to his core. He concedes that the host of Hello, World often stabbed him in the back in front of millions of viewers, but would he actually stoop to murder? Stanley doesn't intend to be a sitting duck for another try. But Higgins police chief Marilyn Tunney, Stanley's high school sweetheart and new flame, warns him to leave the investigating to Brad Bridger - her young, very handsome detective.
