Summary

Despite the attention devoted to the use of music and sound in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Fox 1997-2003) in the science fiction, fantasy and cult television press, little academic attention has been paid to this aspect. In contrast to the volume of writing on music in film, there is relatively little available on the role of music in television. The book addresses this gap and provides an overview of the roles and functions of music and sound in the interpretation of a television show. This is done through analyses that focus on the music production process, the title theme, scoring and source music, the critically acclaimed 'musical' episode (voted number 13 in the 100 Greatest Musicals on Channel Four), silence (as opposed to the norm of sound in television programmes) and reception of music by the show's fans. In keeping with contemporary trends in the study of popular music, a variety of critical approaches are taken from the fields of musicology, cultural studies and media and communication studies, drawing on critique, analysis, hermeneutics and industry studies.
