In 1842 LDS apostle Heber C. Kimball wrote to colleague Parley P. Pratt: "Brother Joseph [Smith] has got a small company [and] feels safe in their hands. And that is not all, he can open his bosom to and feel himself safe [in their presence]. I wish you were here so as to see and hear for yourself. We have received some precious things through the prophet on the priesthood that would cause your soul to rejoice. I can not give them to you on paper for they are not to be written. So you must come and get them for yourself. There is a similarity of priesthood in Masonry. Bro. Joseph says Masonry was taken from priesthood but has become degraded but many things are perfect." Joseph Smith's Quorum of the Anointed explores the earliest period of Mormon temple development, when Joseph Smith gathered a small group to teach what he called the mysteries of God and a new manner of prayer. The Nauvoo Endowment Companies begins the day the Nauvoo temple in Illinois was opened to the Saints and continues until the western exodus of 1846.
