Summary

This book provides a detailed and comprehensive guide to working with risk. It begins by looking at notions of need, vulnerability and protection and looks at the theoretical concepts of each before applying them to practice. By using this combination of theory and practice the authors are able to integrate policy for a wide range of services users from older people to children and families and younger adults. Case studies accompany and illustrate each method and the reader is invited to engage in a number of exercises and activities to consolidate learning.

Author Biography

Steve J. Hothersall is a senior lecturer in social work at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. He has worked as practitioner and manager in children's services and taught across the UK and Europe. He is the author, co-author and editor of several books, including Social Work and Mental Health in Scotland. Steve is also a children's safeguarder and a curator ad litem.
Mike Maas-Lowit is a lecturer in social work at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Having worked as an ASW in England and Mental Health Officer in Scotland, he has been central to MHO training in Scotland for many years. He has worked for the Scottish Government on developing MHO services and is the voluntary chair of Pillar Aberdeen, a local, forward thinking mental health service.
Professor Jonathan Parker is Head of Social Work and Learning Disability at Bournemouth University and, with colleagues, has developed the Centre for Social Work and Social Care Research. He is currently vice-chair of the joint University Council Social Work Education Committee.
Greta Bradley is a senior lecturer in social work at the University of York. Her academic interests are in community care and workforce studies in social work. Her most recent research is on aspects of sustainable practice in social work, she is a former editor of Practice.
