Excerpts

..."Tanner slept where?" The still trim brunette with the merry blue eyes, otherwise known as her best friend Alice, was going to make herself sick if she didn't stop cackling."On the floor, well most of the night..." Lilly wasn't going to get any help here, she saw that clearly now."Well tonight hog tie him to the bed." Alice looked at the man handling the young calf with expertise in open appreciation. "I'll loan you my rope!""I would have to use it to 'lynch ' that repulsive womanizer Daniel.""Hah, save the rope...I think Tanner has every intention of handling Daniel about as easy as that little calf there." Alice's middle aged admiration was traitorously close to... abandonment."And just who is going to handle him.""Lilly child, if I were twenty years younger... I'd... run like a rabbit." Alice's gusty sigh gave lie to that statement and the mischief in her merry blue eyes warned Lilly she was going to hear no end to her helpful advice."Now you on the other hand, have one heck of a problem... did you see that chin? That man is used to getting his own way and you seem to be... his sole object of solicitous interest right now." Alice was the picture of mocking consolation..."you don't stand a chance honey.""Thanks for the confirmation. I have already suffered from his monumental stubbornness, his over worked imagination, and his considerable... charms. But I'm not entirely spineless. You are supposed to give me support you know. Let's have some help here!""I told you, you can borrow my rope for Pete's sake." Alice's audacity was one of her more redeeming characteristics. "Besides, listening to me got you into this pickle to begin with.""Well, shoot me now and put me out of my misery." Lilly dropped her head in her hands and groaned in heartfelt self pity.*********... In one desperate moment he tried to slip into the coat closet and snatch Lilly inside, but he miss-calculated his victim, and found himself sheepishly apologizing to Alice."Hey I'm sorry okay? You know darn good and well I need to talk to her. C'mon Alice, go get Lilly and tell her I need to see her. Just give me half an hour with her okay."Alice had to laugh. "Well, I do sympathize with your plight Tanner. Really I do." She tried to control the mirth. "But, the reason you pulled me into this closet and not Lilly, is that... well," she patted his arm, "Mary sent me to tell you, you have an emergency at the clinic. I've been searching around trying to find you. But, I just didn't think to check any of the closets. It's a good thing you were lying in wait." Alice laughed at his pained expression. "Really, you're supposed to leave ASAP.""Oh great, just what I needed. Okay, I better go." He sounded so glum."And besides Tanner, I don't know... look what happened the last time I left you alone with Lilly for five minutes." Alice couldn't resist the teasing."I better go because if I'm alone with you for one more minute, I'm going to be arrested for murder." Tanner threw open the door and stomped out, right into the path of Lilly and her father. It only took about two seconds for them to see his red face and burst into laughter. He continued stomping."What was all that about?" Lilly watched him huff away."He has to go to the clinic on an emergency. But, he wanted to stay in the closet." Alice wiped the laughter from her eyes.Greg looked at the angry retreating back and asked in a very confused voice, "Why?""Well he was hoping to waylay Lilly here but so far... he's had the worst luck today." Alice and Lilly's father roared.
