Summary

The Canadian short story - widely recognized as a distinctive andunusually strong genre in the creative literature of the country - wascelebrated in 1986 with the publication of The Oxford Book of Canadian ShortStories in English. Published to great acclaim, the original collection hasbeen a great commercial success. It is here revised and updated to reflect theincreasing diversity of the genre, and the growing reputation of a newgeneration of writers.Of the original inclusions, eight were dropped and thirteen replaced. Eighteenwriters (among them Margaret Atwood, Matt Cohen, Timothy Findley, W.P. Kinsella,and Audrey Thomas) are represented by different stories. Writers appearing forthe first time include Caroline Adderson, Ann Copeland, Bonnie Burnard, CynthiaFlood, Barbara Gowdy, Thomas King, Rohinton Mistry, Diane Schoemperlen, andLinda Svendsen.

Margaret Atwood is a prolific writer, the author most recently of the The Handmaid's Tale and The Robber Bride. Robert Weaver, now retired from his 30-year career as executive producer of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, has edited more than a dozen anthologies.
