Summary

The Nissan 350Z has brought back the glory days of the original Datsun 240Z by offering high performance at a reasonable price. The introduction of the 274-horsepower 350Z was greeted with accolades from the press, enthusiasm from Z-car fans, and open checkbooks from the sports car buyers of the world. Bringing the car from the design studio to the production line required designers and engineers to convince the management team at Nissan to take a chance on a sports car when the company was on the ropes financially. Veteran automotive journalist John Lamm tells this tale of how a great design came to be an affordable, incredible sports car. The story is told with extensive quotes from Nissan's key players in design, sales, and management. More than 180 illustrations show the evolution of the car, including 350Z concept drawings, photographs of early clay mock-ups, and Lamm's drop-dead-gorgeous shots of the prototype and production vehicles. Author Biography

John Lamm has wanted to write about and photograph automobiles since his sixteenth summer. In July, 1960, he attended a road race at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, was mesmerized by what he saw, and made up his mind then and there to become an automotive journalist. After earning a journalism degree (appropriately a BS) from the University of Wisconsin, Lamm did a tour in the army and after returning from Vietnam took a job with Motor Trend magazine in Los Angeles. In 1975, he made the switch to Road & Track and has been associated with it ever since, these days as an editor-at-large Lamm has won the International Motor Press Association's Ken Purdy award and the Motor Press Guild's Dean Batchelor prize for his writing, and has also been honored for his photography
