Summary

This book describes and analyses the different legal approaches and policy discussion regarding cohabitation in the Nordic countries (Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland). It looks at historical developments, general private law principles, division of property on separation or death of one cohabitant, inheritance, and the regulations concerning children born to cohabitants. It concludes by proposing principles for the regulation of the financial circumstances of cohabitants.

Author Biography

Johan Asland (Cand. jur. 2002) has previously worked as an associate in the law firm BA-HR, temporarily appointed appellate court judge in Borgarting lagmannsrett (Oslo) and adviser in the Ministry of Justice, Legislation Department. He was awarded his PhD in 2008 on the thesis ’Uskifte’. As from 2010 Asland is associate professor at the Department of Private Law and from 2012 Professor. Asland is also professor II at Lillehammer University College, co-editor of Journal of Law of Succession, Family Law and Child Wellfare Law, business manager of the Statute Book Foundation of the Faculty of Law, vice chairman of the Board of Directors of The University of Oslo Library and a member of the board of NIR (Norwegian Association of Industrial Property Protection) and Norwegian department of AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) and member of ISFL (International Society of Family Law). He has previously held postitions as secretary of the Inheritance Act Commission, assistant editor of the journal Lov og Rett, and as a legally trained member of the Norwegian Industrial Property Office’s Board of Appeal. Asland has wide experience in teaching both as a university teacher and in courses for lawyers.

Margareta Brattström (LL.M, PhD) is Professor at Department of Law (Civil Law) at the University of Uppsala.

Professor Göran Lind became a Doctor of Laws and an Associate Professor on the faculty of law at the University of Uppsala. Has has partly carried out his research at the Law Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Mr. Lind is also general manager of the Jura Law Institute, which educates judges, attorneys, solicitors and other practising lawyers on the whole field of law. Lind's special legal interests include writing books and articles on family law, inheritance law, statute interpretation law, international private law and comparative law. Since 2012, Göran Lind is professor at the University of Örebro.

Ingrid Lund-Andersen obtained a master in Law at the University of Copenhagen in 1976 and became doctor in law at the same University (2011)
Since 1976 she was Assistant police prosecutor (the chief constable of Horsens), Assistant (deputy) professor at the Institute of Procedure- and Criminal Science at the University of Aarhus (1978-1979), Assistant (deputy) professor and assistant professor in family and succession law at the Institute of Private Law, the University of Aarhus (1979-1984), Associate professor in family and succession law at the Institute of Private Law, the University of Aarhus (1984-2010) and Associate professor in family law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen. Since 2011 she is Professor in family and succession law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen.

Anna Singer is Professor of private law, especially family law at the University of Uppsala. She is also Deputy Vice-President of the disciplinary department of Humanities and social sciences.

Professor dr. juris Tone Sverdrup has a Degree in Economics and Business Administration (NHH Bergen, Norway 1972) and a Master degree in Law (University of Oslo 1977). She was admitted to the bar in 1984. In 1997 she obtained her Doctoral degree in Law. Since 2000 she is Professor of Law at the University of Oslo. Her main fields of research are family law and property law. As author she wrote several books in family law, among others a monograph on co-ownership in marriage and unmarried cohabitation, and – together with professor Peter Lødrup – the text book on family law used in the Law Faculties in Norway. She also co-edited and co-founded Norway’s leading journal on family law (“Tidsskrift for familierett, arverett og barnevernrettslige spørsmål”, Gyldendal). In three periods (2006-2009) she was acting in the Supreme Court of Norway. She is member of the Expert group of the Commission on European Family Law (CEFL) and the Executive Council of the International Society of Family Law (ISFL), of the International Advisory Board for Child and Family Law Quarterly (England), of the Academia Europaea and of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
