Excerpts

Today the oceans are threatened by a seemingly endless discharge of toxic substances—from land, from rivers, and in a rain of atmospheric pollution that falls from the sky. Our oceans have become the world's dumping ground, and yet their health is vital to the well-being of the planet as a whole. Earth's weather systems are largely powered by evaporation of water from the oceans. Oceans also contain much of the planet's wealth: oil, offshore minerals, and marine life are just some of the valuable resources that are being exploited.
Oceans draws together elements of biology, chemistry, geology, physics, animal behavior, and science history in order to make cutting-edge ocean and environment studies both accessible and useful to lay readers. It also explores the interactions of humans and the sea, including military conflict, from the Aegean Wars to the Persian Gulf; exploration, from the Vikings to the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle; economics, from traditional fisheries to aquaculture; and literature, including Homer, Coleridge, and Melville.
