Summary

Most of Oklahoma was included in the Louisiana Purchase, a deal in which France sold a large portion of land to the United States. When Oklahoma was opened up for settlement to non-Native Americans, the government held a "land run" allowing fifty thousand people to run or ride through the territory to claim land for themselves-much of it formerly inhabited by Native people. Cattle ranching, oil drilling, and wheat farming is now important to all of the state's people. The state capital of Oklahoma City was hit by tragedy in 1995 when a bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Book jacket.
