Author Biography

Herman Melville (1819-1891), author of Moby-Dick, Typee, and Billy Budd, among others, is considered one of the greatest American novelists.
Mary K. Bercaw Edwards is associate professor of English at the University of Connecticut, past president of the Melville Society, and author of Melville-'s Sources. As a young woman, she sailed around the world aboard a 38-foot sailing vessel and spent much time in the South Pacific. In addition to teaching and scholarship, she now works high aloft on the only wooden whale ship left in the world, the Charles W. Morgan, berthed at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut.
