Placing it within the theoretical perspectives and debates in organizational theory, this book explores the organizational design and internal functioning of an emblematic yet highly informal transnational social organization: the alternative globalization movement (previously ôanti-globalization movementö). Drawing lessons from the history of political parties and labor movements that frequently tended to give rise to the seizure of power by a few, a heavy bureaucracy, and a lack of transparency, the movements calls for a new organizational vision grounded on a diffused process of power sharing. Nevertheless, how is the organizational structure created and important responsibilities executed? What are the vital modes of acquiring authority? In Particular, what makes certain echelons, groups, or individuals wield more power than others and how do they justify it?
