Summary

The moon is a small hello in the sky. Shining bright as it passes us by.

Introduce little ones to the wonder of the natural world with Our Friend Moon, a beautiful, circle-shaped ode to the moon. Like friends and family throughout a day, a month, or a year, the moon cycles between presence and distance. Hello. Goodbye. Hello again. Even though the moon is sometimes out of sight, it always returns with its warm embrace.

An appreciation for nature begins with noticing. After reading Our Friend Moon, children will love spotting the moon in the sky, pointing to it, and sharing their observation with loved ones. They can even learn the scientific terms for the moon’s phases from the diagram in the back of the book!

Author Biography

Lea Redmond reveals the extraordinary hiding in the ordinary: a saltshaker, a penny, hand gestures, clouds. Lea creates books, journals, toys, games and small adventures that invite humans of all ages to be curious, playful, and kind.

Lea is the author of many publications including Knit The Sky, Paint Chip Poetry, On The Spot, the Made With Love board book series, and the best-selling Letters To My Future Self (over 2 million copies sold in the series!) Her World’s Smallest Post Service project charms thousands with tiny mail every year. Lea runs Lucky Penny Parlor, a whimsical pop-up tearoom, and she is the owner and designer of Leafcutter Designs, an online shop of playful goods crafted in her workshop. Lea offers participatory projects to her 20,000+ newsletter subscribers, such as With a Pencil in My Pocket, in which 150 people each created a small adventure inspired by a different colored pencil each month. Her community of creative folks has funded thirteen successful Kickstarter projects since 2011, including her 47K Seed Money project, a 20K wonder-themed activity deck called Lively Matter, and her recent mail project called Dandelion Post. During the pandemic, Lea created a free, downloadable deck of activity cards for children and their families to have engaging, creative mini adventures at home.

Lea’s work has been exhibited at the Cheese Factory in Petaluma, CA, the 18th Street Art Center in Los Angeles, CA, the San Jose Children’s Discovery Museum, around town, and through the mail. She has given talks at Loyola Marymount University, the Surface Design Association, Laney College, the Adventure Design Group, and Chronicle Books. She was the Creative Mornings SF speaker – Think Like a Prism – in July, 2019 and recently taught a 300+ attendee workshop for Creative Mornings Field Trips called How to Give the Perfect Gift. Lea earned a BA from Whitman College where she studied Continental Philosophy, Art, and Environmental Studies.

Lea grew up on the Southern California coast, snorkeling and exploring the Channel Islands. Learning to knit at age eight from her grandmother was pretty much the best thing ever. When she’s not hiking in the California woods or wandering through junk shops, Lea is making things in her studio in Oakland. Lea believes that even the smallest, subtlest experience can change the world.
