Summary

Geoffrey Panello, a bored junior management type, decides one fall afternoon that his mundane day to day life had bottomed out and was going no where. So, in a sudden burst of youthful recklessness, Geoffrey cleans out his his bank account, takes a taxi to the airport and boards the first plane away from his life. His impetuousness lands him in the budding bohemian world of Asheville, North Carolina. Almost immediately he finds himself drawn into a tight knit group of friends, all A talented, intellectual, cavalier group of both artists and addicts. He finds himself immediately drawn into their world of late nights, never ending parties, and feverish artistic passions entranced by the Byronic devil-may-care lifestyle of these new friends, and helped in no small part by the beautiful girl he met upon his arrival, Geoffrey begins to adapt to their world of celebratory sensory derangements, and the obsessive search for the perfection of their arts. The deeper he finds himself though, the more clearly he begins to see the tolls their freedoms have taken, the damage and psychological battle scars from wars too often waged upon themselves, and the truth that lies within the eyes of the last of the American Dreamers.
