Summary

This intriguing new book presents an exploration of the unconventional side of psychology: parapsychology. Assuming no prior knowledge of psychology, Roberts explores a wide array of unusual phenomena (dream telepathy, near death experiences, alien abductions, astrology, the placebo effect, and awareness during anaesthesia and in comas), addressing the myths surrounding paranormal experience and placing them within the context of scientific study. The book aims to bridge the gap between traditional psychology and its 'fringe areas', evaluating reports of bizarre events through assessment of the evidence that supports them. Explanations are clear and accessible, with boxed sections detailing scientific aspects of specific topic areas. The authors have also included interactive material to allow the reader to become involved in the research. Although written primarily for undergraduate students of psychology, the popularity of its subject will make it appealing to the lay reader and anyone who wants to know what the paranormal can tell us about ourselves.
