Summary

The French word orfèvrerie defies precise translation in that it defines both the art of the goldsmith and the silversmith plus that of the artist craftsman who works in precious metals. The industry received a huge impetus in the early 1890s with the decision to expand membership of two of the Paris Salons to include jewellery and orfèvrerie . The Salons afforded newcomers broad exposure to collectors (including the State), the press, and the public at large. With Salon membership the door to recognition and respectability also opened up for metalworkers and their displays included such household items as andirons, vases, grilles and balustrades mostly fashioned from bronze or wrought iron. Other areas included candlesticks, clocks, coffee services and light fixtures.
