When first undergoing treatment for cancer, Sigourney Cheek sometimes didn¿t have the energy to do anything more than sleep. So she created an e-mail list of eighteen people and logged on to give updates when she could. Soon that list grew to 160 contacts, forming a sacred community of healing in cyberspace. The exchange of communications became an antidote for the isolation of illness, and a rallying point of hope for Sigourney, as she faced her disease and continued to live her life with humor, realism, and joy.

Author Biography

Sigourney Woods Cheek earned a bachelor's degree in art history from Manhattanville College and studied on the graduate level at Vanderbilt University. Active for many years in the Nashville fine arts community, she co-founded the Antiques and Garden Show as a fundraiser for Cheekwood and the Exchange Club of Nashville charities. She has chaired the Iroquois Steeplechase, the Swan Ball, and the board of directors of Cheekwood Botanical Gardens and Fine Arts Center. Cheek has also served on the boards of the Junior League of Nashville, Leadership Nashville Alumni, Nashville Institute for the Arts, the Garden Club of Nashville, Belle Meade Metro Planning Commission, Magdalene House, and the YWCA. A member of the vestry at Christ Church Cathedral, she is married to James H. Cheek III. Together they have three sons and two grandchildren.
