Summary

Wolfgang Pauli's stature among twentieth-century physicists was unique, but his views far exceeded that of traditional science. Not only did he confront the moral dilemma posed by the atomic bomb, he also saw it as symptomatic of a broader concern: that of the need to focus beyond the rational realm. Science's exclusively rationalistic perspective had fostered a perilous "will to power" that puts all life at risk. Opening science to consider psychic phenomena, Pauli thought, would add a crucial humanistic dimension. Pauli explored such phenomena in his own life by analyzing his dreams with the aid of the eminent psychologist, C. G. Jung. Now David Lindorff supplements the remarkable letters Pauli and Jung exchanged over the course of twenty years with his own insightful interpretation. In the process, he plumbs the depths of both the atom and the unconscious and makes a major contribution to understanding how these two great thinkers approached the "psycho-physical problem" - the need for science to become morally accountable.
