Summary

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents Worldwide and represents a largely "silent" public health epidemic. Advances in acute medical care have resulted in better survival rates, but long-term quality of life remains of ongoing concern. The cognitive, emotional and behavioral consequences of TBI frequently pose life long problems for these children and their families leading to substantial economic and societal costs.

Vicki Anderson is professor of Pediatrics and Psychology, University of Melbourne and Director, Critical Care and Neurosciences Research, Murdoch Children's Research Institute and Director of Psychology, Royal children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Keith Owen Yeates is professor of pediatrics, psychology, and psychiatry, The Ohio State University and Director, Center for Biobehavioral Health, The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital and Chief, Department of psychology, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH, USA.
