Summary

The year 2006 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the description of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodefciency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). During that year, nearly 40 million people were living with HIV/AIDS worldwide and nearly 3 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses.
