Excerpts

CHAPTER 1 PERFECT CV A perfect CV is a CV that achieves the interview, no more, no less. When the CV puts your name on the interview shortlist, it has done its job. WE START WITH A WORD OF WARNING Without too much difficulty you can find lots of people only too willing to give you advice on how you should present your career in CV form. In fact, people who give advice on CVs are rather like economists - if you laid us end to end we might go to the moon and back and you would still be given different information. We differ because there are no rules about CVs, no absolutes, only principles and it is these principles which are the subject of this little book. Some of the suggestions that follow you will love, others you will abhor. Please be selective because in the end you are going to be the person who will be batting off your CV. It has to be your document and consequently you must feel both comfortable and confident with it. SOME GOOD NEWS Very few people spend money on job search books so the fact that you have invested in this book will hold you in good stead. You have invested in professional advice so having read this book and cherry picked what you like, your CV will be far better than the sea of amateurs stuff that is out there. MAKE IT SPECIAL The life of corporate and graduate recruiters is dull enough already without everyone's CV being the same. Make your CV unique and special: take what follows as guidelines rather than ground rules, suggestions rather than shibboleths. There is no bible or Ten Commandments on how to write CVs, but only ideas and concepts which have been proven in the job market by thousands of job hunters with whom I have been privileged to work. You will receive as many different pieces of advice on your CV as the number of people to whom you show it. Before you take the advice ask yourself the Quality Control Question: When did the person giving this advice last gain a job for themselves or for someone else on the basis of what they are telling me to do? If their job success or experience is not recent, handle the information you are given with care. Writing a CV is not difficult but it is onerous. If your CV is to be successful, it will take lots of time - first draft usually about six hours of creativity, determination and frustration. There are no short cuts to doing it properly. You don't need luck in your job search, it just takes effort.
