Violence against women in plays bywomen has earned little mention. This revolutionary collection fills that gap, focusing on plays by American women dramatists, written in the last thirty years, which deal with different forms of gender violence. Each author discusses specific manifestations of violence in carefully selected plays: psychological violence, violence within the family, violence suffered by women at the hands of the medical profession, violence caused by situations of war and social injustice. This book encompasses the theatrical devices used to represent violence on the stage in an age of virtual, immediate reality as much as the problematics of gender violence in modern society.

Author Biography

Barbara Ozieblo is a professor of American Literature at the University of Malaga, Spain. Her publications include Susan Glaspell: A Critical Biography (2000). She is the co-founder of the Susan Glaspell Society, serving as its first president, and has now turned her attention to Contemporary Women's Theatre. Noelia Hernando-Real is an assistant professor of English and American Literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. Her publications include Self and Space in the Theater of Susan Glaspell (2011) and several articles on women playwrights. She is vice president of the Susan Glaspell Society.
