Summary

English summary: On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the death of Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), the 9th Wittenberg Spring Conference on the history of the Reformation with speakers from all over Germany and several European countries centered on the topic of Melanchthon's significance for Europe. Unlike most of his contemporaries, the great scholar's influence extended far beyond the Wittenberg region - through his treatises, his correspondence and testimonials, his exegesis and sermons, through confessions and orders, through historical studies and other scholarly essays. The contributions to this volume address this component of his reception in a threefold way: by looking at Melanchthon's European network, at his personality and its resonance in Europe, and at the various disciplines that were influenced by Melanchthon and his writings. This anthology therefore firmly places the reformer from Wittenberg within the European context and at the same time throws new light upon him from this new perspective.
