Summary

There is very little in the history of philosophy on even the simplest questions about curiosity. Beginning with a brief critical historical survey of the basic relevant philosophical literature on curiosity and ideas in the psychology literature on the topic, Inan questions the basic assumption that curiosity is a form of desire. He argues that in order to start an inquiry based on curiosity one must have the ability to conceptualize the unknown. Here proceeds his notion of the inostensible: our ability to refer to something unknown (inostensible reference) is a precondition for us to be curious and to start an inquiry. Continuing with a discussion of the ostensible/inostensible reference distinction in philosophical literature, acknowledging Russell, Donnellan, the de re/de dicto distinction, and Kripke, Inan provides an account of the linguistic and epistemic conditions both for a being to be curious and for a being to satisfy his curiosity, for which he finds that there are no universal criteria. He ends with a discussion on the limits of curiosity and its satisfaction and finally an overview of key conclusions on the topic.
