General Augusto Pinochet is considered one of the most sinister personalities in history. Not only in Chile, where his regime murdered thousands of people, tortured many others, and destroyed Republican democracy, but also worldwide. The coup d'etat on September 11, 1973 that overthrew President Salvador Allende and began Pinochet’s subsequent dictatorship through 1990; his strong push for the principles of neoliberalism; and his arrest in London in 1998 at the request of Judge Baltasar Garzón, based on the universal jurisdiction for crimes against humanity, transform him in an unavoidable character whose figure shows up from time to time.
Amorós reconstructs Pinochet's childhood and family life, and with great detail recounts his long military career; he examines Pinochet’s role during Allende's government and in those dramatic hours when the coup took place; and outlines his ambition and thirst for power, which led him to erect a regime based on terror and fear that shook Chile to its core.
