Babson College President and former Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey delivers an urgent message to concerned citizens everywhere: America desperately needs a new and vibrant centrist movement to unite people across the political divide. While most moderates will recognize themselves within the shorthand ideological framework of “socially liberal, fiscally conservative,” that formulation leaves a lot to the imagination. Healey argues that the policies to unite the moderate majority should be fresh and forward-looking, leveraging American innovations in science and technology to tackle our nation’s most complex and stubborn social challenges. She outlines six key policies that begin the conversation to draw a more defined picture of what it means to be a part of the moderate majority in American politics. But the “New Centrists,” as Healey calls this new movement, must moor their policies to the foundational principle of human dignity, allowing the movement to break free of stifling dogma on the Right and on the Left and to embrace innovative policies that appeal across geographical, religious, and political divides.
