Summary

The Pot depicts the community cooking vessel used in the Calusa village. The story is about Cato, a Calusa brave, and his chance encounter and love affair with a Spanish maiden, Carlota, in the time period of Ponce De Leon’s voyages to Florida. The Calusa, or fierce people, inhabited south Florida in that time period before the Seminoles and are now extinct. It is an adventure story that carries Cato across the ocean and back as he unwittingly prepares to become leader of his nation. The author became interested in the Calusa after finding traces of their culture in and around south Florida. He realized a lot of the area had changed very little from some six centuries before. The author uses this fictional story to describe the Everglades and south Florida and the Caribbean to the reader. His love of the area is apparent in his descriptions.
