Summary

The best explanation for the development of cross-gender reproduction, or breeding, is the theory which suggests it evolved from bacterial cannibalization. A theory which is based on the fact that certain strains of bacteria will cannibalize, or extract, genetic material from deceased members of their own strain, in order to repair or improve their genetic code. These bacteria will also exchange genetic material with living members of their strain for the same purpose. The connection between this behavior, in certain bacteria, and cross-gender reproduction is indicated by the fact that when egg and sperm unite, the first thing they do is to replicate their own genetic material, exchange parts of their codes and then continue the process of reproduction. A further fact supporting this theory, is that the purpose of cross-gender breeding is the same as the goal of bacterial cannibalization. In both cases, the aim is to acquire the best available genetic material.Eventually, members within the same species came to differ with regard to gender -- one gender (the female) producing the egg, and the other (the male) the sperm. This distinction probably occurred after the development of multicelled organisms and specialized reproductive cells.
