Summary

Professions across Europe have faced significant and radical challenges. This book analyses three professional groups involved in the academic and health sectors and how they are affected by different national Welfare State models such as Mediterranean, Scandinavian and Anglo Saxon. The cross-national focus allows an examination of the political, social and economic contexts and how each acts as a significant influence on policies in higher education and bureaucratic organisations.

Author Biography

Teresa Carvalho is a Senior Researcher at CIPES and a Professor at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. She is coordinator of the ESA network of the Sociology of Professions (RN19). She has published research both in book chapters and in journals such as Higher Education, Higher Education Quarterly, Higher Education Policy and Minerva.

Rui Santiago is a Senior Researcher at CIPES and Professor at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He is Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Education Sciences. He has published several book chapters and articles in journals such as Higher Education, Minerva, Higher Education Quarterly, Higher Education Policy and Análise Social.
