Summary

How can the project manager gather the information that is needed for a stakeholder analysis? Particularly in terms of the reward expectations the stakeholders have in return for contributing to the project. For one thing, the expectations are seldom (well) described in the project mandate. Further, expectations are not equivalent to deliverables; stakeholders often focus on whether the project outcome meets the stakeholders' expectations and demands rather than whether the deliverables are delivered as agreed. Many examples can be given of cases in which stakeholders forget whether the project deliverables were delayed, or whether the project was accomplished in a good or bad way financially. Sometimes stakeholders even forget to assess whether the project outcome is equivalent to specifications agreed upon at the start of the project. In other words, the stakeholders assess the benefit the project delivers here and now and in a much broader sense than 'just' deliverables. of course, this is an enormous challenge the project owner, project manager and project team are facing when covering this point in the stakeholder analysis.
