Gegenstand der Untersuchung ist die Wirkungsgeschichte Goethes in Deutschland von den Sturm und Drang-Jahren bis in die Jahre der Übergabe des Goethe-Nachlasses. Die Studie erörtert die Verweise auf den 'Prometheus-Goethe' und Anspielungen auf die Figuren von Apollo und Zeus/Jupiter in weit verstreuten Quellen, wie Briefen und Tagebüchern, Nachrufen, anekdotischen Erzählungen, 'Goetheliedern', Festschriften und Werken Heines. Das Material reicht dazu von Büsten, Zeichnungen und Gemälden über die Medaillen und die Stiche der Prachtalben bis zu Denkmalstatuen. Anfangend mit den Prometheus-Vergleichen zwischen 1773 und 1775, weist der Band hier ein Geflecht von Bildern des Autors auf der Folie der Zeus-Gestalt der 'Ilias', der Erzählung des Titanenkampfs und der Statuen des Apollo Belvedere und Zeus Phidias nach.
